At The Gatsby Supper Club With The Hot Mops

By Joan S. Peck

The  Gambit in Henderson hosts the Gatsby Supper Club, where you can step back to an “old” Las Vegas charming supper club atmosphere and listen to fabulous music. One of the musical groups to perform regularly is John Wedemeyer, a renowned guitarist, and The Hot Mops, a band you don’t want to miss.

We were there recently to hear them play, and they did not disappoint. They sang and played their hearts out to the applause and appreciation of the audience. Clearly, the band members enjoy performing together and being part of the group, which shows in their performances. Good humor, tasty food, and excellent music make for a delightful evening that no one should miss.

Toscha Comeaux, the lead vocal, is always fun with her teasing and draws the audience to her with her exceptional voice. The other band members, equally brilliant, are David McLaurin – Sax and vocals; Brian Triola – Keys; Eric Ramey – Bass; Jess Gopen – Drums; and John Wedemeyer – Guitar.

I was curious to know more about the man who says, “I look more like a real estate agent on stage than a musician.”

John says his entire reason for playing the guitar is Led Zeppelin. A midnight screening of “The Song Remains The Same” inspired him to pick up the guitar at age 11. John spent much of his early career in blues and roots music and later in the “jam band” scene.

Since relocating to Las Vegas in 2006, John has played or recorded with a wildly diverse list of artists, including The Righteous Brothers, Donny and Marie Osmond, Clint Holmes, Kristen Chenoweth, Debbie Gibson, Michael Grimm (2010 winner of “America’s Got Talent”), Susan Anton, Wayne Newton, Cindy Blackman-Santana,  Lucie Arnaz, Martin Nievera, Femmes Of Rock, Christine Ebersole, Starship, Aurea (Portuguese pop sensation), Earl Turner, Lani Misalucha, Taylor Dane, Frankie Moreno, and David Foster among many others.

John also played in some Broadway shows in Las Vegas, including “The Addams Family” and “Surf: The Musical.”Now, as a member of Zeppelin USA, John Wedemeyer’s career has come full circle. He is thrilled at the chance to perform this music we all love…the music that inspired John to become a guitarist…with his good friends.

The Hot Mops perform on the first Wednesday of each month. So make your reservations for January 4th to attend the Gatsby Supper Club and enjoy it all – fun, food, and the fabulous music of the Hot Mops.
