HIRING A DESIGNER

ASK THE EXPERT

By Thomas Burger

WHY: “To Find and Define Your Style: saving you time and money and often times the marriage!”

THOMAS EXPLAINS: Interior designers help create the character of your home such that it reflects YOUR personality and desires.

What exactly do I mean by this? They are handed an empty shell – basically lines on the computer that separate rooms and that’s it. They select everything such as your kitchen cabinets, appliances throughout, countertops throughout, flooring throughout, built-ins, tubs, toilets, sinks, faucets, wall tiles, shower enclosures, lighting both recess and pendants, vanities, wall finishes and color palettes throughout, window treatments, solar shades, door styles, door hardware, cabinet pulls, furniture layouts, and finally furniture and art style and placement.

Their basic function is to get inside your head, interpret your needs, solve problems and come up with a design strategy to bring that vision to life- great for couples who have different tastes and styles and need guidance to fuse their styles harmoniously together. Designers also create budgets based on a PLAN using real numbers reflecting each and every item to be used in your home that lead you to a successful end of your design project knowing where and how to allocate monies for the greatest impact!

WHEN: “The moment you consider moving, renovating, building or redecorating”

THOMAS EXPLAINS: When is a good time to look for and hire a designer? Great question! Before you do anything, even before you look for an architect. Of course, you want your home to look incredible from the curb but if it doesn’t make sense inside what’s the point? I’ve seen plenty of new homes going up here in Las Vegas with price tags $8M+ with 8000sq+ and they still have your fine dining in the kitchen. I would never accept a table next to the kitchen when dining in a restaurant why would I be ok with it in my own home? I’ve also noticed that the one and only family gathering room (the Great Room) often only seats 4 1/2 people. I’m sorry, but in a five-bedroom home that just doesn’t make sense. I’ve also seen million-dollar Strip views blocked by a large stone fireplace wall. I ask myself, “How does this happen?” Over the past 40 years I’ve noticed that most architects, and I’ve worked for and with the biggest names on the planet, design from the “outside – in” and most designers design from the “inside – out”, a far better way of designing a home. Frank Lloyd Wright approached architecture and design exactly this way – he even insisted on designing most of the furniture as well! Suffice it to say, his work has endured as some of the greatest architecture and design projects of the century. Be smart! – Follow his lead!
