HOLIDAY DECOR

ASK THE EXPERT

By Thomas Burger

My staff and publicist have insisted that I write a holiday article. So I put in my favorite holiday movie “A Christmas Carol.” Nothing puts me in the holiday spirit more than Ebenezer Scrooge. As a designer, one might assume that I decorate for every holiday. The truth is I don’t usually like adding frivolous decor to an already perfect room. However, I make the exception for Christmas trees. Why do I make the exception? Because I can place a tree anywhere in the home and decorate it without disturbing the room itself. A decorated tree stands alone in a room as a piece of furniture, so to speak. I like to keep my holiday decor contained as opposed to spreading knick-knacks all over the room.

That being said, I plan my trees in advance so I know exactly what the look is and what ornaments, lights, tree style and color I will need to create the vision. The trick is to decorate the tree so that it either stands out dramatically OR blends into the room. As in my interior designs, I enjoy the uniqueness in creating both.

TIP : Look around your room and decide if the color tree, lights and ornaments look good in the room. As in all good design, color and scale are important. The Christmas tree, however, is the one exception to scale. Go big if you can! It’s fun to have something stand out as “Grandiose” once in a while.
