A while back, my husband surprised me with theatre tickets to see Derek Hough at the Summit Showroom at the Venetian Resorts. The show NO LIMIT gives a whole new meaning to the poker term.

It was dazzling! I was on the edge of my seat with excitement, anticipation, and wonder. For 90 minutes, it was non-stop entertainment from the Emmy Award-winning, New York Times Best-Selling author and “World of Dance” judge Derek Hough. NO LIMIT features awe-inspiring choreography with never seen dance elements, breathtaking lifts, scintillating costumes, and astounding versatility designed for the Summit Showroom.

I watched my toes tapping in the darkened room as Derek took us on a true fusion of Dance and Music on stage. His magnetic personality graces the ballroom dance floor with the rhythm of tap, salsa, cha-cha, hip-hop, the elegance of waltz, the drama of paso doble, and everything in between. The costumes sizzled with glittering sequins that graced the floor. At one point, Derek confided in the audience that as junior competitors, he and his sister would run to scoop sequins and bugle beads from the floor after senior dance competitions … a great juxtaposition between then and now.

His flawless execution of dance movements only surpasses his creativity. He and his supporting six dancers (three females and three males) complete the ensemble, each a sheer perfection of brilliance and grace.

Of course, a major element of dance is music, and no show is complete without music accompaniment. This show has a three-piece orchestra consisting of percussion, guitar, and woodwind, each performer extraordinary in his own right. The woodwinds were performed by Darien Orr, who primarily played saxophone and carried the melody. Occasionally, he grabbed his clarinet for particular passages. The guitarist, Blasé Sison II, was brilliant in the background, and percussion by Ben Verderame kept everything together.

Each musical piece created a synergy of movement and sound for each type of dance. Somehow, the music blended with the dancers’ actions and emphasized their movements to the audience’s delight. Throughout the show, you could hear the audible gasps and shouts from the crowd with every lift or unexpected step. You felt as if you were in Spain watching the paso doble. With the tango, you could feel Argentina. And with the waltz, you felt you were in the grand ballroom of the past court of the Austrian Kings.

The world champion was out in front with every dance, melding with the music and his partner (later disclosed as his fiancée). She was truly elegant and beautiful and stood out from the other cast members. Between dances, the audience was treated to an engaging patter between Derek and his intended that allowed the audience to feel even closer to the show.

It was very clear that the supporting cast of Diego Pasillas, Chase Boden, JJ Dixonbey, Hayley Erbert, Charity Anderson, Audrey Case, Kailyn Rodgers were world-class and flawlessly supported and enhanced Derek’s energy and skill.

Derek’s residency at the Venetian ends September 17th. If you delight in the art of the dance, you will not find a more charismatic and entertaining venue anywhere than seeing Derek Hough in NO LIMIT.
