Las Vegas’s MOST SWINGIN’ Big Band – The JOI Jazz Orchestra – has scored a new home for jazz in downtown Las Vegas.
Take note! Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, the entourage hits the stage at Notorietry inside the Neonopolis.
The JOI Jazz Orchestra is a professional big band comprised of “first-call” musicians in Vegas – the local best-of-the-best thoroughbreds of jazz. In a relaxed, intimate environment, performances showcase the musical genius of three dozen of Sin City’s most accomplished musicians, along with surprise guest artists.
The space is an extraordinary, spot-on fit for the Jazz Orchestra. Neon and three gigantic crystal curtain “chandeliers” animate the rich black walls and high-soaring ceiling. Audiences can kick back into a luxurious Jazz Club environment – with a choice of spacious seating at couches, ottomans, and small cocktail tables. No tight concert hall seating here! Jazz lovers can access a long bar along the back for refreshments and libations throughout the evening.
Professional lighting and sound tech enliven the stage to produce a clear, brilliant sound – as if everyone is intimately inside the recording studio alongside the musicians. The vibe is relaxed, elevated, and first-rate (even JOI-ful and fun!). With no sight lines in the way, there’s not a bad seat in the house.
From BeBop, Scat, Count Basie, and progressive jazz standards to original compositions and arrangements by Jazz Orchestra musicians, the evening seamlessly evolves with smart commentary by trombonist Curt Miller, who introduces selections and highlights star players.
Under trumpeter Gary Cordell’s leadership, the JOI Jazz Orchestra generates a perfection of musical choreography – where the big band sound shimmers in unity, and individual improvisation delivers infinite sparkle.
