TIMELESS & ENDURING SPACES

INTERPRETING EACH CLIENT’S UNIQUE VISION

By Cary Vogel, IDS

My mission as an Interior Designer is to interpret our client’s unique vision to create for them comfortable, livable and timeless enduring spaces to truly enjoy.

Especially now during these unusual and uncertain times, where we are all spending much more time at home, and ”home” has become more than sanctuary but is now workplace, school room, entertainment venue, exercise studio, etc. Clients are now reaching out to freshen-up, upgrade and adjust or retrofit their homes to meet this new reality.

Custom homes have been moving in this self-contained, all-encompassing direction for years with production homes following suit. Media rooms with state-of-the-art technology is nothing new; neither are home gyms. So what’s different now? We are seeing that the previously very desired “open floor plan” with “great rooms” is now in question.

For one current project, we are making a guest bedroom, only used on occasion, into guest bedroom/office for the lady of the house. The shared office space in the home has now become the man of the house’s domain as he is on conference calls many hours of each day, a distraction to anyone at the other workspace in the room.

Removing the missus’s work station has now allowed his office to become an office/media room as we are now adding theater seating and a new, larger television for after-work-hours relaxation.

On an aesthetic note, we are also finding the streamlined – all gray interior has given way to warmer tones, a softening of the more severe lines popular a few years ago… Clients want a more “homey” feeling, of course, if you know me, I always try to create warm, inviting and cozy/friendly environments even in a modern design… A “severe” interior has never been something that appealed to me.

While I’m certainly not an “essential worker”, by any means, I believe I am improving our clients’ quality of life, by helping them to live better, edit choices to what is important to them and provide optimum function in beautiful spaces. I’m always grateful for this opportunity!

I’ve included a series of photographs below that exemplify the current “mood” being desired by clients, as they spend additional time retreating in their residences.
