Jazz Outreach Initiative is keeping Las Vegas’ rich jazz tradition alive while cultivating the musicians of tomorrow. From free youth education and professional jam sessions to an exciting calendar of concerts and festivals, JOI is preparing for a busy season—and its approaching 10th anniversary. Young musicians can have a summer filled with opportunities to express themselves, build confidence and learn new skills. Through its expanded free summer jazz programs, the Jazz Outreach Initiative (JOI) is providing creative access points for all interested participants. As part of its annual “Jammin’ with JOI” program, JOI will offer two locations for students to jam this summer, thanks to support from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
I have never seen - nor heard - so many young (jazz) hands clapping with such appreciation as I did during Jazz Outreach Initiative’s (JOI) “Jazz for Young People” Concerts at Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center! Over three thousand enthusiastic students from the Clark County School District were bussed in to experience two back-to-back performances with the acclaimed Jazz Vegas Orchestra and world-renowned saxophonist and vocalist Camille Thurman. She definitely answered this year’s theme, “Who is Ella Fitzgerald?” and then some.
Las Vegas’s MOST SWINGIN’ Big Band - The JOI Jazz Orchestra - has scored a new home for jazz in downtown Las Vegas. Take note! Every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, the entourage hits the stage at Notorietry inside the Neonopolis.
